Patricia Kitcher, "The Unity of Kant's Active Thinker", offered a particular interpretation of the transcendental deduction as moving regressively from the assumption of empirical cognition to the necessary condtions of thinking, including the transcendental unity of apperception. The unity of apperception shows the poverty of inner sense views, according to which inner sense simply takes a record of psychological goings on. Our awareness of rational judgement must proceed in the light of a consciousness of judging based on the evidence. Not only cannot inner sense views account for this phenomenon, neither can contemporary, naturalistic, accounts of reasoning modelled on production systems.
